Suspects in DPS laptop thefts charged

Four men accused of operating a crime ring that stole and sold Detroit Public Schools laptops were bound over for trial Thursday on charges including running a criminal enterprise and breaking and entering, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said.
The charges against the four -- Brian Rogers, Dwaine Scott, Mark Scott and Jaisaun Holt -- carry penalties of up to 20 years in prison. Arraignment is set for June 9.
The defendants are among 10 men accused of stealing and selling 104 laptops, worth a total of more than $158,000, from four school building from December 2009 to January 2010.
Michigan State University football player Dion Sims pleaded guilty to one felony count of receiving and concealing stolen property in connection with the case. He was sentenced to a year of probation.

Region Man pleads guilty in hoax to Coast Guard

A Detroit man is facing up to six years in prison after pleading guilty Thursday to making a hoax call about a capsized boat to the U.S. Coast Guard, costing the government $53,000 in search
and rescue efforts.
Craig Sanders, 32, made the fake call March 11. He said his boat was in Lake Erie and that he couldn't find his buddy, authorities said. An eight-hour Coast Guard search-and-rescue mission included units from Ohio and a helicopter from the Air National Guard Base.
Sanders will be sentenced Sept. 6. He faces a possible $250,000 fine and could be held liable for the search and rescue costs.
